Ancient waters
THE STRAIT
OF MESSINA
The narrow strait between Sicily and Calabria has been one of the Mediterranean's most legendary fishing grounds since antiquity. Strong currents force nutrient-rich deep water to the surface, creating an ecosystem that draws swordfish during their seasonal migration each summer. Sicilian fishermen have hunted them here for millennia using la passerella — spotting fish from tall masts on specialized boats called felucche, a tradition passed from father to son. Our swordfish is line-caught during the brief summer season and hand-packed into tins with Sicilian extra virgin olive oil. The flesh is firm, clean, and unmistakably Mediterranean — nothing like the farmed or frozen swordfish found elsewhere. This is the real thing, from waters that Homer himself wrote about.
